Run-flat tyres have a unique reinforced sidewall construction which give you the ability to drive with a flat tyre for a limited distance at a restricted speed. Run-flat tyres are generally capable of traveling a distance of 50 miles with a maximum speed of 50 mph. This does however vary depending on the make of vehicle and manufacturer of tyre, and it is advisable to replace the tyre at the earliest possible opportunity.
A run-flat tyre will have a unique manufacturer symbol on the sidewall of the tyre such as RFT, SSR, or RSC. If you are not sure please feel free to pop in for a free tyre and pressure check, any one of our trained technicians will be able to help you.
It is possible to replace your standard tyres with run-flat tyres, but we highly recommend that you check with the car manufacturer first. Your standard wheels might not be suitable, and you will also need a tyre pressure monitor system to be fitted, so as to identify a puncture if you have one.
It is also possible to replace your run-flat tyres with standard tyres, but as above we highly recommend that you check with the car manufacturer first. You should also check with your insurance company, as the change may be classed as a modification. You will need to purchase a spare wheel and tool kit, as normal pneumatic tyres cannot be driven deflated like a run-flat tyre can.
Views on repairing run-flat tyres vary widely across the industry. When a tyre is used under inflated, the tyre’s internal structure is subject to very high stresses. Run-flat tyres have specially reinforced sidewalls that enable them to perform. Unlike standard tyres the symptoms of weakened or permanent internal damage may not be visible on a run-flat tyre, however this damage renders the tyre unsafe and dangerous to use. Great care must be taken when attempting to repair a run-flat tyre. Having considered all of the information available to us, it is our policy not to recommend the repair of run-flat tyres.
Run-flat tyres should only be fitted by fully qualified technicians using the correct fitting equipment. We have the latest fitting machines and electronic wheel balancers meaning that you can trust us to fit all types of run-flat tyres.
